The film centres on the supposedly true events in a haunted house in Rhode Island, New York, Variety reports.
Producers will base the film on the memories of two paranormal investigators who were called in by the family but will depart from the original story because they do not have the rights.
Wan, who most recently directed the low-budget hit Insidious, is best known for creating the Saw franchise.
Insidious producer Jason Blum said this month that the director and writer would consider making a sequel to the film, in which a family race against time to rescue their unconscious son from the paranormal realm.
