The X-Men: First Class star would replace Michael Fassbender, according to Variety.
Trance centres on the efforts of a criminal gang to recover a stolen painting, the whereabouts of which is unknown after their art gallery accomplice suffers a blow to the head.
McAvoy's character is forced to hire a hypnotist in order to work out where the assistant left the goods.
He is currently also attached to crime thriller Welcome to the Punch and will next be seen voicing a character in the animated Arthur Christmas.
Trance will be shot in September with the goal of a spring 2013 release, after Boyle finishes co-ordinating the opening ceremony for next year's Olympics.
