Fox left the franchise and her role as Mikaela Banes before the third film after falling out with director Michael Bay and was replaced by British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
LaBeouf told E Online that he felt his character Sam Witwicky was held back by Fox's on-screen counterpart as it meant that there was "no arc" in the films.

"I love Megan. She was great in the movies she was in... fun to work with, great energy, great personality. But it's kind of a blessing that she wasn't in this movie... selfishly," LaBeouf explained.
"In the second movie, [Sam and Mikaela] became one character. There was no arc. There was no room for Sam to be heroic. They were sharing the same experience."
LaBeouf recently insisted that he is finished with the Transformers franchise and will not return for a fourth film.
