Production on the HP Lovecraft adaptation was stopped after the film failed to secure the necessary budget. Del Toro left the project in March, confessing that he was puzzled by Universal's decision not to greenlight the movie.
However, the Pan's Labyrinth director has now declared in an interview with Movieline that At The Mountains of Madness could still be made into a film someday.
"I think it's either going to happen one day in the right way, or I really think the worst thing that can happen to a movie like that is for it to get filmed the wrong way," Del Toro said. "There are two ways of preserving the greatness of a movie: Making it, or not making it. But what you cannot do is make it the wrong way because you needed to make it, that's silly."
Hellboy creator and writer Mike Mignola recently revealed that Del Toro is unlikely to make a third Hellboy film, claiming that the director's hectic work schedule will prevent another entry from happening.
Del Toro is currently at work on the alien invasion movie Pacific Rim, which is scheduled to open in cinemas on July 12, 2013.
