Johnny Depp to star in 'Carter Beats the Devil'?

Warner Bros is said to want the Pirates of the Caribbean star for the role of Carter, a magician that is forced on the run after performing a trick on the President, who mysteriously dies shortly afterwards, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Two sources told the newspaper that Warner Bros has placed Carter Beats the Devil on the fast track for production, stating that the company is reportedly looking for directors.
Tom Cruise previously tried to mount an adaptation of the popular 2002 novel. However, the project was discontinued while still in development.
Warner Bros has yet to confirm the reports.
Depp is currently filming the vampire movie Dark Shadows, followed by The Lone Ranger, opposite Social Network star Armie Hammer.
The actor recently performed alongside Alice Cooper at London's 100 Club, playing guitar on a number of tracks.
