The Lost creator stated that while the film was initially meant to be a prequel to the 1979 film Alien, it eventually developed into an independent feature, according to Slash Film.
"Prometheus started as an Alien prequel. That is what everybody wanted it to be," said Lindelof.
"I've always felt that really good prequels should be original movies... So a true prequel should essentially precede the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different, feature different characters, have an entirely different theme, although it takes place in that same world. That was my fundamental feeling about what this movie wanted to be."
In April, Xenomorphs were spotted on the set of Prometheus, suggesting that the aliens may be making an appearance in the sci-fi film.
Guy Pearce is also rumoured to be in the cast.
Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba.
