The Breaking Bad star could be joining confirmed cast members Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling.
Gangster Squad follows the overhaul of the corrupt Los Angeles police department in the 1940s, with Cranston up for the role of the ambitious Texan cop Max.
The story centres on the battle between the department and East coast gangsters, led by Sean Penn's mafia boss character Mickey Cohen.
Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is helming from a script by homicide detective-turned-screenwriter Will Beall.
Cranston is also attached to Ben Affleck's third feature Argo, as well as hyped projects Rock of Ages and Total Recall.
Ahead of Breaking Bad's fourth season, he admitted that plans for mini online episodes as teasers had been vetoed by the network.
Breaking Bad's new season commences on July 17 on AMC.
Cranston will also be seen playing a car mechanic in Drive alongside Gosling and Carey Mulligan.
