Foxx was reported to have been in final talks for the role last week, with the actor being Tarantino's first choice.
"I think, just to be able to work with Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and to be able to tell a story that needs to be told," he told CNN on what he was looking forward to about the project.
"If you're a fan of Inglourious Basterds, I mean, you know... It's just amazing. It should be amazing."
Will Smith and Luther's Idris Elba were also rumoured to be in contention for the part of Django.
DiCaprio will reportedly play a plantation boss who holds Django's wife captive. Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz will also appear.
Django Unchained will be released by The Weinstein Company on Christmas Day 2012.
