The movie series is expected to continue after the huge global box office success of the third film Dark Side of the Moon.
"One of the stars being mentioned is Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley's] boyfriend Jason Statham," Showbiz Spy quotes a source as saying.
"It's clear the franchise still has huge potential but with a new leading man capable of taking Transformers in a new, darker direction.
"Jason could be just the man to do that and his relationship with Rosie would be an added bonus in marketing the movie."
The Crank star admitted in January that he is happy to be an action star and would only consider a role outside of the genre if it was "interesting" enough.
LaBeouf revealed recently that he has "nothing left to give" to the franchise. He said: "I'm sure they'll make more of [Transformers] - it's still a very hot franchise. I'm not sure I have anything more to contribute."
Statham will next be seen in Killer Elite with Robert De Niro and Clive Owen.
