According to Variety, Lennix has been cast in the role of General Swanwick, a character not based on anyone from the DC Universe.
Lennix is best known for his role as handler Boyd Langton in Joss Whedon's ill-fated sci-fi series Dollhouse.
The actor also had a notable role in both The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions as rebel Commander Lock.
Man of Steel wil star Henry Cavill as the titular superhero, opposite an ensemble cast including Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Julia Ormond, Russell Crowe and Christopher Meloni.
The film, produced by The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, is due to begin shooting later this summer.
Man of Steel is expected to launch in cinemas in December 2012.
