According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stevenson has been cast as a lead COBRA operative known as Firefly, said to be a dangerous ninja and explosives expert.
Stevenson was previously best known for starring in the HBO television series Rome but appeared as Volstagg in the Marvel Studios film Thor earlier this year.
The actor will join new cast members Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Elodie Yung, DJ Cotrona, RZA and Adrianne Palicki when G.I. Joe 2 begins production this summer.
The Hasbro-themed sequel will also see original cast members Channing Tatum, Ray Park and Byung Hun-lee reprising their roles as Duke, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow respectively.
G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes has been lined up for a release in August 2012.
