Heat Vision reports that Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment's Gigi Pritzker have teamed up and optioned the project for development.
Di Bonaventura is best known as one of the key producers behind Michael Bay's popular Transformers franchise, as well as the recent videogame adaptation G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
The producers are now said to be looking for a writer to work on developing a script for the project.
Space Invaders was originally launched in 1978 and is notable for being one of the first ever videogames.
It has since gone on to be voted the top arcade game of all time by Guinness World Records, and is often included on videogame compilation titles.
Last month, it was reported that Independence Day director Rolan Emmerich was in talks to helm a film adaptation of Atari classic Asteroids, which will also be produced by Di Bonaventura.
