The Thor actor is in talks to portray the British Formula 1 driver James Hunt in the forthcoming biopic, Deadline reports.
Penned by The Queen scribe Peter Morgan, Rush centers on the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda for Formula 1 circuit dominance in the 1970s.
Hunt won the world drivers' title in 1976 and was more widely known for his eccentricity and playboy lifestyle on and off the track.
He worked for the BBC as a motorsports commentator before his death, aged 45, in 1993.
Hunt's rival Lauda won three world drivers' championships during the 1970s and 1980s.
The film will likely be the next directing project for Ron Howard.
Hemsworth has committed to a number of films in recent weeks, including the crime thriller Shadow Runner and Snow White and the Huntsman.
Hemsworth, who is currently shooting The Avengers, will also star in the sequel to Thor, which is slated for a 2013 release.
Rush is scheduled to begin filming in March of next year.
