He will be joining Paul Dano, Elliott Gould, Antonio Banderas, Deborah Ann Woll and Annette Bening, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The next film from Little Miss Sunshine co-directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton centres on a writer whose ideal woman comes to life.
Coogan will be playing a rival author to the young novelist.
There Will Be Blood's Paul Dano will be taking on the lead role, with Zoe Kazan playing the fantasy woman. Actress and He Loves Me screenwriter Kazan is Dano's real-life girlfriend.
Coogan will next be seen in Our Idiot Brother with Zooey Deschanel, Paul Rudd and Emily Mortimer.
In April, the actor confirmed that a feature-length version of the BBC comedy I'm Alan Partridge will arrive in cinemas by 2012.
He was also reportedly in talks to be the titular character in the biopic of porn and property baron Paul Raymond in May.
