The star of The Killing takes on the role of Millennium magazine owner and art director Christer Malm in David Fincher's adaptation.
Kinnaman's character has been added to Fincher's first film in the trilogy, even though he was originally meant to be only appearing in the two follow-ups.
Speaking to 24 Frames, the actor said: "The truth is I haven't read the books. I tried with the first, but I just couldn't get into it."
He also told the site that he thought the original Swedish-language films are not very good.
"I thought the Swedish movies were nothing great, just sort of average," he said.
Kinnaman will next be seen in Lola Versus with Greta Gerwig and Bill Pullman.
Director Fincher recently bought the rights to the novel Panic Attack, which is about a family battling an intruder in their New York apartment.
