The True Blood actor will play a Viking in the film, which revolves around two Swedish brothers who are exiled to America.
Skarsgård will also produce the movie for Warner Bros, with a script from Chris Boal, according to Variety. Movie bosses are reportedly comparing the project to epics Braveheart and Gladiator.
The actor already plays a Viking-turned vampire in HBO's True Blood. He recently revealed that he has lost his private life since joining the series.
Skarsgård will soon appear in the remake of Straw Dogs and nautical blockbuster Battleship.
