The Lucky star confessed that he was attracted to the role of Ben because it offered him a chance to play something different than the "nice guy".
"For me, what really stuck out was a chance to do something different and play within the wheelhouse that I'm known for - which is being the sweet, nice, unassuming guy - but then also tweak that a little bit and have him have this angle to him that is not so sweet," Hanks told Collider.
In Lucky, Hanks plays a serial killer who comes under scrutiny after winning millions in the lottery.
Hanks went on to speak about his upcoming trip to Comic-Con to promote the sixth season of Dexter.
When asked if he was excited for the San Diego convention, Hanks said: "I am! I can't wait! I've been wanting to go to Comic-Con for ages. I've never been able to be involved in anything there."
Hanks recently joined Seth Rogen's film My Mother's Curse.
