The Dark Knight Rises star is being considered for the role of Capone in the film Cicero, The Playlist reports.
Cicero centers on the gangster's rise to power in prohibition-era Chicago. The movie purportedly has the potential to be developed into a trilogy, ending in the gangster's conviction on tax evasion.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates is being eyed to helm the crime film.
Hardy recently confessed that he was knocked out by Shia LaBeouf on the set of The Wettest County in the World.
In May, the first image of Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises was released to promote the launch of the movie's website TheDarkKnightRises.com.
The Dark Knight Rises is due to be released in the US and the UK on July 20, 2012.
