Sam Rockwell is reportedly in negotiations to replace Jeremy Renner as the male lead in Better Living Through Chemistry.

According to Variety, Rockwell will star as a shy pharmacist in a loveless marriage who embarks on an affair with a trophy wife, played by Alias star Jennifer Garner.

The two characters begin experimenting with prescription drugs and eventually plot to kill Garner's on-screen husband.

The Avengers star Renner was previously attached to the project but has dropped out for unknown reasons.

The film will be directed by Geoff Moore and David Posamentier and also stars Michelle Monaghan and Judi Dench.

Rockwell is best known for his role as Tony Stark's nemesis Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2 and in Duncan Jones's science fiction drama Moon.

Rockwell will next be seen opposite Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig in Jon Favreau's comic book adaptation of Cowboys & Aliens, due out on July 29 in the US and on August 12 in the UK.
