Ben Stiller will be directing and starring in a long-planned remake of the 1947 comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

The actor is to take on the central role as a quiet man with a boring life who fantasises that he is a hero, Deadline reports.

Stiller reportedly signed up to the project after receiving a script from The Pursuit of Happyness writer Steve Conrad.

Walter Mitty has been in the works since 2005, when Owen Wilson was named as a possible contender for the lead.

Sacha Baron Cohen was also reported to be considering the role in a remake that would have had him playing Mitty as a store manager.

Stiller is keen on turning the rebooted version into a family franchise, it is thought.

He will next be seen in the sci-fi comedy Neighbourhood Watch, which sees neighbours battling against extra-terrestrial forces.
