The 30-year-old said that while he normally enjoys working out, the intensive training required for Captain America was "brutal".
"I usually like working out. Going in sucks, but walking out, you're like, 'I'm glad I did that!'" Evans told PopSugar. "This was different. I'd walk out and I'd be like, 'I need to vomit. I hate this trainer. I hate this movie. I want to go to sleep for a week.' It was just relentless."
Evans went on to say that his dietary restrictions were even worse than the workouts.
"Working out sucked, eating sucked more," Evans said. "You get to a point where you just can't even look at another piece of chicken. You're just so bloated, but you just have to keep consuming protein, so that was tricky."
Captain America director Joe Johnston described Evans as the perfect actor to play the eponymous superhero, saying that he shares many traits with the Marvel Comics character.
The actor recently revealed that he considers himself to be a great date, admitting that he is well-versed in dating etiquette thanks to his mother.
Captain America: The First Avenger opens in cinemas on July 22 in the US and July 29 in the UK.
