The comedy legend has appeared in a number of films in recent years including Gulliver's Travels and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, but he is now hoping to make a success of his own screenplay.
"I have got an idea for a film but, like a lot of my ideas, I have a good first third and then nothing," Connolly told Scotland's Daily Record.
"I think it's a really good idea and I'm scribbling away. I think I should find somebody to work with on it."
Connolly added that he is proud of the movie career he has built alongside his comedy work, such as lead roles in Mrs Brown and The Last Samurai.
"It's the kind of thing I always wanted to do, but I'm a bit limited, so I'm not surprised it has gone the way it has," he said.
"I thought I had a wonderful film career, compared to, you know, considering where I come from and what I do. I'm delighted I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever."
Billy Connolly will lend his voice to Pixar's upcoming movie Brave, to be released in June 2012.
