The actor stars as a worker in a futuristic society where people stop ageing after 25 and have to buy time to continue living for more than a year.
His character helps a stranger escape the clutches of a criminal, only to find himself being framed for murder and being chased by a policeman.
Timberlake told Empire: "I was a HUGE fan of Gattaca and The Truman Show, and Andrew [Niccol, director] called me and we sat down and talked.
"My favourite action movies as a kid were First Blood, The Fugitive, Die Hard, but what I loved about all of those were they were everyday men doing extraordinary things.
"That's how he sold me on this guy. I am scared s**tless of putting on the tights of a character that already exists, but it seemed cool to me to have this character, and this thriller of this ordinary guy trying to stay alive."
Timberlake has said that he was "stoked" to be appearing at Comic-Con alongside co-star Amanda Seyfried.
The Social Network star will next be seen in Friends with Benefits with Mila Kunis.
