Robert Zemeckis is in talks to direct historical monster movie Here There Be Monsters.

Here There Be Monsters pits real-life British Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones against sea creatures that are suspected of capsizing merchant ships.

The Back to the Future director would be working from Robin Hood writer Brian Helgeland's script, The Wrap reports.

Zemeckis has been attached to several live-action projects since making motion-capture film Mars Need Mums, which failed to make back its $150 million budget (£90 million) at the box office.

He was reportedly in negotiations to adapt sci-fi classic Replay, which inspired Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day.

The director most recently confirmed that he will be making Flight with Denzel Washington. Flight is Zemeckis's first live-action film since Castaway in 2000.

The drama follows a pilot who struggles with the knowledge that he endangered the lives of his passengers with his drinking after he saves his plane from crashing.
