Trance centres on an art heist that doesn't go to plan. James McAvoy is reported to be signing up for the lead role - an inside man involved in the heist.
Cassel, a supporting actor in Black Swan, would play McAvoy's accomplice, while Zookeeper star Dawson would star as a woman who bonds with both men, Deadline reports.
Danny Boyle was previously said to have wanted Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson for his latest directorial project. He has previously helmed Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours.
Joe Ahearne and John Hodge penned the screenplay for the thriller.
Trance has tentatively been given a March 2013 release date.
