The Apollo 13 star will portray the villain in the forthcoming adaptation of the Dark Horse comic book, according to Variety.
R.I.P.D., which stands for Rest In Peace Department, centres on a ghostly police force who battle unhinged spirits.
The film stars Ryan Reynolds as a cop, with Jeff Bridges as his partner.
Bacon previously played a villain in this summer's X-Men: First Class.
Jodie Foster was reportedly approached to appear in the action comedy last month in the part of Procter, the boss of the police force in question.
R.I.P.D. is scheduled to open in cinemas on June 28, 2013.
