The film stars Carell as a man faced with divorce, after his wife, played by Julianne Moore, reveals that she has been having an affair.
"I think many times people disregard the emotional impact that divorce has on a couple and a family because it happens so frequently," Carell explained to The Huffington Post.
"What's clear in the movie is how powerful and emotionally draining [divorce can be]. It's a huge loss and I think people tend to, I don't know if trivialise is the right word, but I think they under-appreciate the enormity of the effect a divorce can have on people."
Carell also discussed whether he believes in soulmates, as his character's son does in the film.
"I've been married 16 years and I believe that I found mine, so I certainly have that to base it on," he added. "I think I got lucky and ended up marrying the right person."
Crazy, Stupid, Love stars Carell and Moore opposite the likes of Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon.
The film was released in US cinemas this weekend, and hits the UK on September 23.
