The 22-year-old, who plays Skeeter in the highly-anticipated adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel about black housekeepers in the 1960s, confessed that she found it disconcerting to visit modern-day black women who were still working as maids.
"The weirdest thing for me was going to the houses [in Baptist Town, where part of the film was shot] and we would meet the housekeepers who were in uniform working for the family," Stone told the Los Angeles Times. "Viola [Davis] would be in costume and these women would be in uniform and they would avert their eyes when they were shaking my hand. It was mind-boggling."
Stone went on to discuss whether there was any rivalry among the extensive female cast, which includes Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.
"Women in general, if they are not wildly insecure, feeling like other women's success is their failure, then women are actually really great to each other," she said.
In mid-July, the actress described her part in The Help as her first grown-up role, admitting that she is excited to be no longer playing only high-school students.
Stone also recently claimed that Bridesmaids has "opened doors" for comedic actresses.
