The Limitless star is in talks to play a man with severe depression who moves back in with his mother and then has a relationship with an eccentric neighbour.
Jennifer Lawrence is now attached to the script after beating Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively and Olivia Wilde to the role.
Cooper is believed to have negotiated for the lead role before Wahlberg had been considered, Deadline reports. Wahlberg previously worked with Russell on the Academy Award-winning The Fighter.
Russell's adaptation of Matthew Quick's novel follows his decision to drop out of two big-budget projects Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
His departure from the latter could mean that casting will begin again as Wahlberg was slated to appear in the title role of the video game adaptation.

Cooper revealed last week during a live Twitter chat for Digital Spy that he would be interested in making The Hangover III.
He said that it would be "insane" to shoot the possible sequel in Europe, before adding: "Insane meaning good!"
