The Social Network star will play the lead role in the adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novella The Double: A Petersburg Poem, NY Mag reports.
The book is about a Russian government clerk who becomes convinced that a doppelgänger has stolen his name, face and identity. It is believed that Eisenberg will play both roles in the film.
Director Ayoade recently joked to Digital Spy that the lead role would be played by popstar twins Jedward.
The script, co-written with Avi Korine, will reportedly move the story to the present day.
