Felton has claimed that the film aptly deals with the issues of ethics in scientific experimentation, and serves as a warning to humanity for the future.
"Along with a strong story [the film has] a strong message that humans can't play God too much," Felton told MTV News. "We should not overstep our bounds when it comes to Mother Nature."
"We are our own cause of destruction, which is quite an insight, I think," he added, regarding the film's bleak plot. "Hopefully it is a wake-up call for the world so we don't overstep our boundaries."
The film, from director Rupert Wyatt, also stars James Franco, Brian Cox, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is currently on US release, and hits the UK on Thursday.
