James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Alan Cumming have been cast in an adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Filth.

McAvoy will play policeman Bruce Robertson in Jon S Baird's upcoming take on the 1998 book, The Playlist reports. Shooting is due to start in January.

Welsh said: "That's going to be the main cast. James is going to be main character, Jamie is going to be Lennox, his kind of sidekick, and Alan is going to be Toal, his boss."

Of working with Cass director Baird, Welsh added: "Jon and I hit it off and became good friends. I've been trying to Filth made with different producers and directors for years.

"Jon did a revised screenplay which was absolutely brilliant. He's captured and kept the essence of the main protagonist but he's done a lot of interesting things with it as well. He's kind of rendered it very, very cinematic and it's going to make a great film with that cast."

An adaptation of Welsh's Ecstasy directed by Rob Heydon will be released in October.

Danny Boyle has said that he still hopes to direct Porno, Welsh's sequel to Trainspotting, despite doubts cast by Ewan McGregor, who played Mark Renton in the first film.

McAvoy is reportedly in talks with Boyle to star in his upcoming movie Trance alongside Vincent Cassel.
