Lionsgate has scheduled a release date for the follow-up to The Hunger Games.

The film studio announced today that Catching Fire, the second novel in Suzanne Collins's dystopian trilogy, will open in cinemas on November 22, 2013.

In the sequel to the highly-anticipated film, protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself back in the Hunger Games alongside Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) just one year after winning the deadly competition.

Last week, Lionsgate released two images from The Hunger Games. The first features Katniss and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) in the woods together, while the second shows Peeta outside his family's bakery.

It was recently revealed that Steven Soderbergh has agreed to serve as second unit director on the forthcoming film in order to keep production on track for the movie's spring release date.

Filming is currently in progress on The Hunger Games, which is set for release on March 23, 2012.
