Yates will be pairing up with Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves to bring the Stephen King book series to the big screen, HitFix reports.
King's The Stand centres on the impact of a virus which manages to kill 99% of the human population, leaving only two gangs battling against each other for supremacy in the post-apocalyptic world.
The novels were turned into an ABC miniseries in 1994, with the book version revised by King in 2008.
In February, Warner Bros and CBS acquired the rights to the epic, which the writer will be involved in producing.
Yates has been considering directing the big-screen version since he was attached to the last film in the Harry Potter franchise.
Universal recently dropped plans to make a trilogy and miniseries of Stephen King's Dark Tower.
