The 23-year-old, who shot to fame in 2001 as Draco Malfoy in the wizarding series, told The Huffington Post that while he wouldn't trade his Harry Potter experience, he is keen to pursue roles which are completely different in the future.
"It's a mixed bag, because it gets you through the door to meet people, but they're often sceptical and don't believe you can do anything else," Felton explained.
"It's great when you do get to do something else, because then they have to rethink their preconceptions. I was nervous about what was going to come next, and then things started happening, like [Rise of the] Planet of the Apes."
Felton said that his Harry Potter past will always remain with him as he gets older, and admitted that he has not yet fully processed his experience.
"It's a bit too soon to put it all into perspective, if I ever will. It's a bit strange but great that we have these films now as a product of our hard work, and we can look back on them and cherish the years when we made the films," he said.
Felton previously insisted that his casting in Harry Potter had nothing to do with acting ability but rather that he embodied the right look.
