Worthington, who played the lead character in Cameron's 2009 blockbuster, revealed that the director is still working out where he wants to take the potential sci-fi franchise.
"I know he's nutting out like a bible at the minute," Worthington told Coming Soon. "[It's] sort of like a precursor of Avatar to just get himself back into the world and the mindset and the characters.
"That's how he works, it's very detailed and very weighty. But the story arc is huge. It's going to be amazing."
"I've talked to him, he's told me what his plans for the story are and it's huge," the actor added. "But he's not going to start until he raises the bar for himself, and he's in no rush."
Worthington recently said that he plans to take a short break from acting, after four years of non-stop work in Hollywood.
Cameron has previously confirmed that two Avatar sequels will be filmed back-to-back, with expected releases in 2014 and 2015.
