The Notting Hill star will play Dr. Curt Connors, a scientist who accidentally transforms himself into a humanoid lizard, in the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot.
In a new interview, Ifans opened up about working with director Marc Webb, insisting that the newest instalment in the superhero saga will reclaim the "poetry" of the comic-book story.
"The shoot was phenomenal," Ifans said. "It was a dream come true really. A franchise that has such gravitas as this - it's all eyes on you - and what Marc has done is very exciting. Not to be disparaging to the other movies at all, but they were kind of going a certain way and Marc has rolled it back to its delicate, human domesticity."
He continued: "Spider-Man is a working-class hero. He's an everyman. And I think Marc as a director and Andrew in his performances are doing special - we're reclaiming the poetry of the hero and of the story."
Last month, Ifans revealed that he doesn't consider his character in the film to be a villain in the traditional sense, claiming that Connors wants to do good, but simply makes a serious error in judgement.
The actor was arrested in July at the San Diego Comic-Con after allegedly pushing a female security guard shortly before appearing on stage at the Amazing Spider-Man panel.
The Amazing Spider-Man is due out in US and UK cinemas on July 3, 2012.
