Lionsgate confirmed last week that the classic 1987 film will be remade by its original choreographer Kenny Ortega.
Former Dancing with the Stars professional Derek Hough is thought to be in the running for the role of dance instructor Johnny Castle, played in the original film by Patrick Swayze.
Hough apparently wants to convince Ortega to cast Cole in Jennifer Grey's old role of Frances 'Baby' Housman. According to The Sun, he has been submitting material to prove her worth as a dancer.
"Derek submitted a DVD of him dancing with Cheryl at her O2 show when she supported The Black Eyed Peas last year. He wanted producers to see their chemistry," a source told the paper.
"He also put in a copy of Cheryl's video for her single 'Parachute', to show how good a dancer she is."
Justin Timberlake and Emma Stone have already been tipped for Dirty Dancing's lead roles.
Jennifer Grey recently confessed that she is "so excited" about the remake.
