The Bridesmaids actress was noticed by Bateman in the surprise hit, Deadline reports.
McCarthy will play a thief who steals the identity of Bateman's average guy character.
The first screenplay by The Pursuit of Happyness director Steve Conrad is currently being reworked by The Hangover 2's Craig Mazin to change the gender of the criminal.
McCarthy recently revealed that she was keen to reprise her role as Megan in Bridesmaids.
The actress has reportedly been cast in a romantic comedy with Mad Men lead Jon Hamm, as well as Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow's sequel to Knocked Up.
Before her breakout role in the hen party film, McCarthy was best known for her titular part in the comedy series Mike & Molly.
