David Tennant: 'Esther Rantzen taught me how to stop crying'

David Tennant has revealed that he borrowed advice from Esther Rantzen on controlling his emotions when acting.

The former Doctor Who star takes on the role of vampire hunter Peter Vincent in upcoming horror remake Fright Night.

Tennant told Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 this morning that he recalled a piece of advice from the journalist and TV presenter.

"I remember her when I was a kid doing That's Life and somebody interviewed her and said 'What do you do when you [don't] want to cry?', and she said, 'I dig my fingernails into the palm of my hand and it just stops me going and I can carry on," he revealed.

"And she is absolutely right! And I have done that, it can also stop you laughing at the wrong moment as well."

Tennant added: "So you just have to grow your fingernails slightly long and dig them into the palm of your hand."

Discussing the possibility of the cast returning for Fright Night sequels, the actor explained that it would depend on how the film performs at the box office.

"I can't speak for everyone else, I don't know if I'm meant to divulge that information, it's like top secret. There were clauses, yes," he said. "I'll still be there at 75, hopefully keeping my shirt on by then. There might be another couple."

Fright Night opens in the US today and on September 2 in the UK.
