Sheen was given the prize by son Emilio Estevez during a ceremony held at Chicago's AMC River theatre.
Illinois governor Pat Quinn also honoured both actors upon their visit to Chicago by declaring Friday to be Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez Day.
West Wing actor Sheen praised Governor Quinn while speaking to the Chicago press, saying: "You've got this guy in the middle of it all in Illinois who's a progressive, who's deeply humane, extremely bright and so practical and he's just one of my heroes and I adore him."

Last week, Sheen ruled out running in the upcoming Irish presidential election, after a campaign was set up.
Estevez recently said that his brother Charlie has regained his focus following his axe from Two and a Half Men.
Martin stars in son Emilio's latest directorial effort The Way, which opens on October 7 in the US.
