The actress told the New York Daily News that she found her character in the film easy to relate to and thought the storyline was scarily realistic, prompting her to sleep with the lights on.
Holmes recalled: "When I read this script, I was scared and I had to turn on all the lights in my house. I thought I heard noises. And I held my child really close.
"Guillermo created a very real world with people that seem normal with real problems, so they are very relatable. They can be any one of us. So therefore, the monsters, the creatures could invade any of our houses, which makes it scarier."
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark opens on August 26 in the US and October 7 in the UK.
Holmes recently revealed that she is extremely afraid of raccoons and "barked" at one to get it to go away.
