The British actor, who stars opposite Emma Roberts in the coming-of-age drama, told Digital Spy that he admired writer/director Gavin Wiesen's script for not portraying a "perfect" high school relationship.
Highmore said: "The Art of Getting By represents that relationship in a more truthful way. It's fantastic but at the same time it brings troubles as well and it's not all plane sailing.
"That's what really stood out to me, the accuracy of it and the attempt to make it as true-to-life as possible."
