20th Century Fox is planning to produce a new adaptation of Mary Shelley's iconic novel and is eager to bring Levy on board to direct Max Landis's script.
Levy is currently involved in a 3D remake of Fantastic Voyage with James Cameron, but the project will reportedly only move forward if Will Smith can be convinced to play the lead role.
Fox is keen to transfer Levy over from Fantastic Voyage to Frankenstein, reports Deadline.
Several Frankenstein projects are in the works in Hollywood, including an adaptation of Peter Ackroyd's novel The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, a Guillermo del Toro movie and a version based on graphic novel Wake the Dead.
Levy's next film, the Hugh Jackman-led robot boxing blockbuster Real Steel, will debut in cinemas in October.
