Cannes winner shunned by cinemas

Ken Loach has complained that British cinemas are rejecting The Wind that Shakes the Barley – his new film that won Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or.

Distributor Pathé has reportedly had just 30 orders for prints of the film, meaning it will – as things are - only be shown in 30 cinemas across the country.

The film is about the battle for Irish independence, and Socialist Loach thinks its political content is the reason for managers' wariness.

Speaking at an event organised by George Galloway's political party, Respect, he said that some critics were "creeping out from under their stones, slagging off a film they've not even seen".

He added that more than 300 orders for the film have been made in France and 50 in Ireland. "But in the UK, it's hardly going to be shown," he commented. "Our only hope is if everyone goes in the first week and the exhibitors see the demand."
