The 33-year-old recalled being apprehensive about meeting the Oscar-winner due to his reputation as "a tough guy to work for", but eventually managed to win his "respect" by standing up for herself.
"James Cameron didn't scare me," she told The Mail On Sunday. "You hear stories about him being a tough guy to work for, but he's very humble. When he walks into a room his presence is undeniable, so at first when you meet him it's kind of confusing - should I be scared? No, the thing is, you should be yourself and James respects that.
"He's very passionate about what he believes in and he's super-talented, but he also respects people who stand up for their beliefs. Usually, though, he's right."
Saldana also updated movie-goers on how a sequel to the hit sci-fi film is progressing.
"We're hoping to do Avatar 2 next year," she revealed. "James is working on the script now and I've missed playing Neytiri. I can't wait."
Earlier this weekend, Saldana cleared up misconceptions about her claim to have had a 'breakdown' after Avatar.
