Nick Nolte has signed up for director Ruben Fleischer's period crime drama Gangster Squad.

The actor joins Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling in the movie, Deadline reports.

Nolte's character Bill Parker is the new police chief who is told to sort out a corrupt Los Angeles police department in the 1940s.

Fleischer is directing from Will Beall's adaptation of Paul Liebermann's series of news articles for the Los Angeles Times on crime during the decade.

Gangster Squad will focus specifically on the police department's pursuit of notorious gangster Mickey Cohen, to be played by Penn.

Nolte is also currently attached to Taylor Hackford's Parker, Idea in America and Robert Redford's The Company You Keep.

The 70-year-old actor recently admitted that he has a new love of martial arts after being introduced to the sport while shooting the boxing drama Warriors.
