The Australian actress is expected to take on the role of Myrtle Wilson's sister Catherine, according to Entertainment Weekly.
She will be joining a cast that so far includes Leonardo DiCaprio in the titular role, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke and Isla Fisher.
Ward has so far been seen in The Strangers and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Luhrmann has also added fellow Australian and I Am Number Four star Callan McAuliffe to the cast.
The Moulin Rouge director will be working from a script co-written by Craig Pearce.
Joel Edgerton recently praised Luhrmann's "visual language", comparing it to author F Scott Fitzgerald's writing.
In July, Ward made her stage debut in The Ugly One, a play about the modern obsession with looks.
