Venezuela opens studio to challenge US

Venezuela has launched a new movie studio in an effort to challenge Hollywood's dominance.
The Film Villa Foundation was opened this weekend by President Hugo Chavez – a controversial socialist with a record for opposing the United States.
Sitting in a director's chair, he gave his blessing to the $9 million project in capital Caracas. "For Venezuela, action," he commented, before calling for independent, South American work to combat international US hits.
"They inoculate us with messages that have nothing to do with our traditions," he declared. "Hollywood sends a message to the world that tries to sustain the so-called American way of life and imperialism. It's like a dictatorship."
The studio's first project will be a series of films about one of the country's historical heroes, Francisco de Miranda.
