The film follows the early career of fictional folk singer Davis, whose character is based on real-life musician Dave Van Ronk, according to Variety.
Ronk was famously at the centre of the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene and became a guru for other musicians such as Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.
It was initially thought the film would focus directly on the inspirational figure of Ronk.
The Coen brothers announced the project in June, saying that it will only feature music "performed live, on a single instrument".
After True Grit, the two worked on a script for director Michael Hoffman's remake of the 1966 crime film Gambit.
In May, the directing team had one of their plays directed by their regular star John Turturro, who has appeared in Barton Fink and The Big Lebowski.
